For a Good Day

I’m asking that no one tells me what to do
No one’s waiting for me
I wake up in a warm cloud
descend from the skylight
Make coffee in the french press
Steam milk
Put on a record, one that I bought for myself and not because it’s a classic
the Eddie & the Cruisers soundtrack
or Fevers & Mirrors, where the B side sat on the player so long each song has a skip
Sing the words the way I know them
The house is already clean
I shake the rugs to feel like I’m doing something
and gold dust is the only thing coming out
It reminds me of a poem I’ve read
so I read it again
Talk out loud to God
tell her what I want
tell her thank you
just tell her what’s going on
My skin and hair stay soft
All the lights are rainbows
All the sounds are birds
They are singing about the sun
